According to Jewish tradition and the wisdom of Kabbalah, many people choose to perform a Pidyon Nefesh — a spiritual practice involving charity, prayer and special intentions — as part of their preparation for the New Year.

Pidyon Nefesh for Every Member of the Family

We recommend performing a separate Pidyon Nefesh for each member of the household, mentioning each person individually by name and their mother's name during the prayer.

Many people also choose to perform an additional Pidyon Nefesh on Erev Yom Kippur, as part of their spiritual preparation for Yom Kippur and the hope for a favorable spiritual judgment.

What Is Pidyon Nefesh?

At times, a person may feel that life has become difficult or that things are simply not “flowing” as they should.

Jewish mystical tradition speaks of spiritual challenges, judgments and forces that can affect a person's spiritual path and sense of blessing.

The practice of Pidyon Nefesh, or “Redemption of the Soul,” is an ancient spiritual tradition intended to accompany a person through such times with prayer, charity and spiritual intention.

The great Jewish sage Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai (the Chida) discusses the importance of Pidyon Nefesh as a means of seeking spiritual relief from difficulties and asking for Divine mercy.

A Traditional Kabbalistic Practice

According to Kabbalistic tradition, Pidyon Nefesh is performed through a specific order of prayer, charity and spiritual intentions.

The traditional practice includes 160 coins, corresponding through gematria to the Hebrew word “Tzelem” (צלם), which is associated in Jewish mystical thought with the spiritual connection between the soul and the body.

The coins are counted according to a specific order associated with Divine Names and Kabbalistic intentions, followed by a special prayer for the individual.

The purpose is not to replace practical action, medical care or personal responsibility, but to create a spiritual framework of prayer, charity, reflection and seeking Divine mercy.
